1917 he won a scholarship to Eton
1921 he joined the British police in Burma
1927  resigned
1928  journeyed to Paris
1932-1933  worked as a teacher in a small private school
1933  published his first book
1934  got a part time job in a second hand  bookshop
1934  published the  first novel Burmese Days
1935 published another novel. called A Clergyman's Daughter
1936 published another book Keep the Aspidistra Flying 
1936 married Eileen
1936  commissioned to write a book about poverty in northern England 
1936  fight in the Spanish Civil War
